Infamous L.A. Hotspot Rises From the Ashes

Micky's, a notorious West Hollywood gay nightclub that almost burned to the ground in the summer of 2007, is putting the finishing touch on its new, bigger self.

Billing itself as "L.A.’s longest continually running gay bar," Micky's is set to reopen in a few weeks. The bar first opened on West Hollywood's raucous Santa Monica Boulevard -- lined with gay establishments -- 20 years ago.

Before a mysterious fire gutted the club a year and a half ago, the second floor was closed to patrons and housed offices. Now a VIP bar will occupy the establishment's second floor. A press release touts that the entire new club will feature "seductive skin tones and decadent materials, like ostrich leather and caesarstone" and that "glam lighting" will highlight the experience of revelers.

Known for its go-go boys and Thursday night "Cocktails With the Stars" event that featured porn stars doling out gifts and industry tidbits, the revamped nightclub now faces an unstable economy and a more diverse West Hollywood. (Neal Broverman, Advocate.com)

    Comment:

Silver Lake has been getting more and more heteroized also. Cuffs and Detour are "straight" bars now. The Akbar seems to have been able to maintain one of the better "diverse" crowds on the east side. Also, do you really want to spend your hard earned money in a place like the Abbey that chose to "remain neutral" on prop 8, even though gay people are responsible for about 99% of their income? I wish the community could pull itself together and get a conscience, purpose, and some leadership.

I find it so damn amazing. One would think that the st8 community wishes us all to return to the closet considering the election and various polls. Yet they [st8's] flock to the 'gay establishments' because we have the best sound systems, better music and more enjoyment of life. Soon they are so damn many st8's in our bars we can't get in!! This happened with the Gay 90's in Mpls. and we left because then the owners [st8 of course] started favoring their own. I personally had a friend kicked out of the gay bar over some words with some st8 clientel.... As if there weren't enough st8 places in the world, they now come to ours! Arggggg.

"...a more diverse West Hollywood..."? That's one way of putting it I suppose. "Gone to the straights" is another. The price of a martini will be at least $13 and don't count on those $1 beer busts coming back any time soon.
