There’s a lot of talk about same-sex couples starting or growing their families. That got us thinking: What classic TV kids would LGBT folks love to have as their own? There are lots of great choices, and here are some of our top picks. We’d love to hear if you agree, disagree, or have other suggestions!
Alex P. Keaton from Family Ties: For all you Log Cabin Republicans out there, Alex (Michael J. Fox) is your guy. He’ll manage your portfolio, tell you whom to vote for, and even keep you on track by making sure you go to fewer happy hours. But beware, a kid like Alex may just figure out a way to have you “retire early” and convince you that that old age home isn’t such a bad place.
Denise Huxtable from The Cosby Show: Played by Lisa Bonet, Denise was the ideal cool-but-still-good teenager who was confident, smart, and opinionated. She made her parents proud and went to college, which earned her a spin-off show, A Different World. She was a trailblazer and would easily be an ally in the gay-straight alliance.
Claire Fisher from Six Feet Under: Lauren Ambrose was the perfect broody teenager living in a funeral home owned by her mother and two older brothers. While her adventures, such as dating a criminal and doing way too many drugs, surely would cause any parent some headaches, it was Claire’s promise of greatness that would lead a mother or father to hang in there with her. If Claire had had two moms, she would’ve figured out that art school thing way earlier.
Stewie from Family Guy: So you want a 1-year-old kid who may try to kill you after you leave him on your Atlantis cruise? Stewie is your baby. At the very least, he’d be very entertaining and be great at happy hours and cocktail parties.
Little Ricky from I Love Lucy: The best thing about Little Ricky was that he was barely around. For all you parents out there who want to have a kid but don’t really want to deal with him or her, Little Ricky is your man. Plus he grew up in the 1950s, so you can fulfill your Mad Men fantasy and come home to a family that helps you decompress after work and make a martini.
A.C. Slater from Saved by the Bell: A.C. Slater (Mario Lopez) is the perfect choice for all you athletes out there. Unlike his foil Zack Morris, who was always getting into trouble exploiting women or ditching school, A.C. Slater behaved, got good grades, and even got to date the school valedictorian, a.k.a. future Showgirl Elizabeth Berkley, who played Jessie Spano.
Justin Suarez from Ugly Betty: Actor Mark Indelicato nailed the gay adolescent role, making him the pride and joy of any LGBT parent. He was obsessed with fashion and stayed true to himself — which helped him win over audiences nationwide. He knew who he was and never apologized for being himself.
