Officials at a Texas preschool first indicated they'd accept the child, then cited religious objections to his enrollment, then invited the family to apply again.

A Montessori preschool in the Dallas-Fort Worth area has come full circle on whether to accept the son of two lesbian mothers for enrollment, initially welcoming the child, then turning him down, then offering enrollment again.

But the mothers, Dawn and Tracy Keller of Bedford, Texas, say the experience has convinced them the school's not the place for their 3-year-old son, Landry, reports Dallas-Fort Worth TV station WFAA.

Dawn Keller toured the New Beginnings Montessori School in Bedford last Tuesday and was impressed. She asked the teacher if the school has any religious affiliation and was told it did not, then asked if the fact that Landry has two moms would be a problem and was told it would not be. But within an hour she received a call from the school's director, Shamain Webster.

"She said, 'We are not going be able to enroll Landry in our school because it's against my religion, and we don't live that way,'" Dawn Keller told WFAA.

Then, after the TV station contacted the school, Webster reversed course. "The owner of the school does not share my beliefs, and he would like to allow them to submit an application," she told the station, adding that the school's owner is her father. Montessori schools all operate independently; they take their name from founder Maria Montessori and follow her educational philosophies.

Nevertheless, the Kellers will be looking at other schools. "It's obvious this is not a place for him," Dawn Keller said. "It's not like we're out to advertise, or anything like that ... we just want some place that'll welcome us just like everybody else."
