The only decent thing Jesse Helms ever did for his country was to die. (After a much too long life.) His virulent hate only fosters the same in return.
Daniel
Not in states like California and New York, but red states like Kansas and Mississippi will continue to give vibrant life to anti gay hate that's propogated under the pretense of defending marriage, family, etc.
Bill
It will always work as long as there are bigots- tyhere are, and the key is to be aware, fight them, expose them for who they are. But we must not forget, ever, that such people are not are friends, nor are they worried about ethics, or any other values but hate, and self-promotion.
Anonymous
Isn't it still? What have the last 8 years been?
Anonymous
As long as there is a Religious Reich and a Republican party in this country, bigotry and hatred of the glbt community has worked in the past, works in the present and will work in the future.
Anonymous
In the south and many other republican strongholds, hatred for LGBT persons is still as natural as breathing for many politicians. It's how many got in office, and how many will remain.
However, the fact that they will all die in the next 30 years of old age gives me hope for the next generation.
Anonymous
I sure hope not. As long as the efforts of the GLBT equality movement continues unabated, we will change the enough hearts and minds to create a majority of fair minded people. However, if we become complacent or get tied up with internal squabbles, far right bigotry could easily raise its ugly head again by playing the us vs. them fear card and undo much of what we have done.
joe bussell
Will work? What a crazy question. The gops thrive on bigotry. When they are not rolling around in their own piles of hate they are using it to motivate their following.
Anonymous
As long as we have uneducated, ignorant people who feel the need to be better than someone else, and follow these churches who continue to lie to them and scare them into believing that, we will always see people like Helms.
Anonymous
Let's hope not; the man is dangerous and ignorant.
Bob Green
It works great in the Republican Party, the whole Party is based on hate and bigotry. Of course they are making themselves a fringe party and becoming the laughing stock of the planet. Of course the intelligent members of the party have all left, shrinking their numbers and strengthening their rotten core making them more and more frightened and angry and hateful. They are imploding.
charlie kohm
Helms was a master of turning NON-FACTS into issues of controversy. His politics thrived on maintaining the spotlight on divisive issues such as gay rights, abortion and affirmative action. He preyed upon peoples fears more than anything else to galvanize support for himself, even when he knew his legislative attempts would never pass in the House. He touted his religious views as being morally superior to his opponents views and his allegiance to fundamentalist christian leaders provided him with a dependable economic base for his campaigns in North Carolina.
I can think of many politicians in office right now who use his tactics. Bush and Tancredi are good examples of how fear and bigotry can be useful tools to get votes.
If anything, there are more imitators of Helms today than ever before! Karl Rove wrote the instruction manual for dirty politics.
Karl
Unfortunately not all people in this country are a "liberal-minded" as we. Yes, bigots exists, and believe it or not, they have their influence on others.
Anonymous
Our top story tonight "jesse helms is still dead!"
otter
A long as people can be motivated by fear of the unknown, bigotry will be used to pry open people's wallets, and capture their votes.
James M. Martin
While I delighted in Choire Sicha's article (I say dump on the dead if they were horrible people while alive), I fear the answer to your poll question is obvious. What do you think McCain's Britney-Paris ad was if not an appeal to the irrational fears of cracker whites like Helms, suggesting as it does that black men only want to have sex with white women, preferably blondes.
Todd
Unfortunately, yes...hate and bigotry will always be around. Those religious fundamentalists always find a way to stick their noses in other people's business.
Tony
I think there will be people who will try to imitate it, but I think America is past the point where a "full-force" attack won't work.
John Esche
Will it work? Of course (witness "Swift Boat" lies and the feeding frenzy over the John Edwards "sex scandal" where the outrage smells more of jealousy than "morality"). Will it work as EFFECTIVELY? No. In most urban and educated rural areas, people simply don't care about other people's private lives or race and broad exposure of the hypocrisy of "family values" and racist right wing candidates and spokespersons has freed them to say so. Sadly, in a U.S. where non-conservatives have to win by MORE than 10-15% or risk short counts and rigged voting machines like those that stole the 2000 & 2004 elections, a little can mean a lot.
Jo Oppenheimer
Unfortunately there are still individuals whose hate of g/l/b/ts is so vehement that hate speech will continue to be used in an attempt to win elections. It won't work as well but it will be visible.
Anonymous
It really doesn't matter to the gay & lesbian community at large whether the Jesse Helms type of bigotry will continue or not, because, for the most part, we don't give a flying fuck! We think that being a gay political activist means getting a subscription to Out magazine and then dishing the outfits that the models are wearing! We're more interested in going to a circuit party or a beer bust rather than defending our dwindling 14th Amendment Rights! Hey, pass the poppers! I love this song!
Anonymous
Fotunately the Jesse Helms of this world are becoming fewer by the year.

Hate is classic and never goes out of style.
Shawn
HELLO, thank goodness the Witch is DEAD, and that is being nice. These people are dying off...so let it be and the younger people know, live your life and will VOTE!
Qris J
I'm thinking no. At least not in the mainstream. But the legacy of Helms, Falwell, et al, lives on as their vile corpses pollute the Earth. One can (and I do) look forward to the passing of Robertson, Phelps, Dobson & David Duke as well. Yet until more rational, ethical & genuinely moral leaders emerge, minorities of all kinds will remain on the defensive politically.
Gene
Fundamental christians and Muslims will always be happy to blindly go along with any bigot who avers homosexuality, being colored, female or of another belief system that does not agree with particular mindless superstition.
Anonymous
It still can survive as long as there are two fradulent political parties dominating the American mindscape.commander
Anonymous
Probably to about 10% of the population.
George Safford
If they vote, the younger citizens will dilute the bigotry and misunderstanding of the elder vote. So the Helms effect is on the wane.
Harry Matthews
Bigotry is no longer socially or politically acceptable. It must be disguised in one way or another. Obama is "foreign" -- maybe even Muslim! Obama is "not ready to lead" -- not white enough to pose for a portrait on our currency. Obama is a "celebrity" -- too famous to understand real folks. Expect lots of new euphemisms from the McCain campaign!
Paul, Dallas - Texas
Many people in our society still respond with fear and hatred towards GLBT people, and unscrupulous politicians will capitalize of that if it gets them votes. The bigots might need to be more subtle but they haven't changed all that much
Joe Laux
It's not working as well, at least not as well as it used to. Just look at the total failure of Sen. Brownback's presidential run, and that of the other 'kinder, gentler' bigot, Mike Huckabee. Hate does not sell as well as it used to, and that's thanks to the LGBT people who are out to their friends, their families, and society in general. As people see us as human beings, hate based politics becomes more and more unacceptable.
Morfy
yes...still a lot of homofobic people out there.... gay people still facing discrimination everywhere
Gordon
We will soon find out in the fall whether those who believe themselves not to be race conscious and are also supposedly voting for Obama, due to some change of time and circumstance and perceptions, are telling the unvarnished truth to pollsters. Those who do not vote for Obama are, of course, not necessarily racist, nor those who vote for him solely voting for him because of his race. I doubt he will win, however, more on the basis of mis-apprehensions and equivocation than otherwise.
Anonymous
For God's sake, I certainly hope not!
Jeffrey
It depends who you are targeting. Unfortuntely, a sizable potion of Americans are still very homophobic, a belief system that is bolstered by religion and bigoted leaders. John McCain may not be as vitriolic as Jesse Helms but he still has no problem affirming our second class citizenship and essentially dismissing our relationships as not equal to heterosexuals. There are many politicians like him, snake oil salesmen who lull us into thinking they are "not that bad". At least with old Jesse we knew where we stood in his mind!!!
Jackie
Of coarse...unfortunately, there will never be a shortage of religious fundamentalists in my lifetime!! I have hope for future generations.
BEM
No. He was too candid about it. The bigots, including those against the LGBT community, are more stealth now. They speak in Beltway code and are aware of youtubers and such. So bigotry continues but by and large the days of being as upfront and vocal about it are over. Not sure whether that's a good thing...
terry
I'm sorry to say this but the American public has a very short attention span. Yes, I think his style will survive and eventually thrive again. It's human nature to hate against something you don't know.

Alas, it's working even as I type this reply.

Jesse Helms' negativity has become a thing of the past. Politicians can't constantly invoke the gay issue to pander for votes. Look where it got Bush now.... true, gay marriage won him the vote in Ohio... but it was the goose that laid the golden eggs.
People worry about their incomes, gas prices, food prices, not whether gays are marrying.
Duane
I think with the advent of the Internet, voters are more informed than ever. Politicians risk alienating themselves, and the people that elect them, by coming off as bigots...It is going to get more difficult for the people that elect these types of politicians into office, to explain and rationalize their continued support of people that are "different", especially at a time when this country is more diverse than ever before.
Communities that are fighting against diversity, and supporting some sort of dictum of "purity" will be the first to go by way of dinosaurs.
John
With everyone having to apologize for any comment which is even slightly politically incorrect, no politician can get away with it anymore.
Anonymous
kind of a leading question, don't you think?

sadly, yes

Jesse Helms and those like him don't invent their message-- they're telling the people that they hope will vote for them what they think they want to hear. When those guys get voted into office, it says more about the constituents than the politicians, not that I don't think Helms was a pretty detestable guy. His style of bigotry will stop being successful at the voting booth when it stops being the style of bigotry that is lived daily by a lot of Americans.
Mark of Pasadena
Hate speech is effective (just look at the last 8 years of Bush/Cheney) and America being essentially a homophobic nation with an ignorant electorate, bigotry will continue to be used.
Anonymous
Hopefully, that time has passed.
Anonymous
Of course it will! Bigotry is endemic in the United States. As long as it continues to be so, it will play a role in our politics as well.
Anonymous
Of course it will. People are always looking for someone to hate or look down on, and gay people (or any other opressed minotiry) are easy targets. And unfortunately, it's the unenlightened masses that win elections.
D Moss
His horrible bigotry still hold sway in some communities, unfortunately. However, each community has the opportunity to stand up and say NO MORE when their representative uses such vitriol and hatred for political gain. I believe that, thankfully, Helms is the last of a dying breed.
Cecl Young
I do not think his style of bigotry will work now - but I would not rule out some one elses style of bigotry.
Michael McFarland
The Homosexual acceptance (gay movement) has been going backwards since the Reagan Presidency and the onset of a True Anti-Christian movement (not true Jesus love), and with the onset of Corporate news that likes to avoid true Journalism of both sides but Corporate profits through division of ideals. We don't have the Anti-homosexual amendments that we do in so many states. These Amendments show the true elitism and racism still alive and well in Helms America.
Anonymous
Absolutely not! I think our nation as a whole is much more intelligent than that.
Anonymous
Of course it will work. Thats how a portion of politicians gets a boost into government. Anytime you see a politician touting "family values" in their campaign, you know exactly what that means.
RFH
Bigotry never goes out of style
Richard - Las Vegas
Although there are so many bigots in the world, unfortunately many of them in our Southern States, we are our own worst enemy! As Pogo (in the comic strips) said: "We have met they enemy, and they are us!" We are far too interested in going to the next White Party, or choosing a polo shirt that won't show sweat stains, rather than expressing our beliefs in the voting booth. How many fags are rushing to Las Vegas to see the homophobic bigot Better Midler, even though she has come out so firmly against gay marriage? She apparently forgot not only what side her bread is buttered on, but who buttered it! And the born again Christian Donna Summer is making new headway in the GLBT community, even though she has made homophobic remarks about gays and AIDS. We are a pathetic group, we gays and lesbians, and we'd better get our shit together REAL SOON or the rights guaranteed under the 14th Amendment will be nonexistent for us!
Anonymous
Yes, it still works -- but with some decrease in effectiveness, and only for a cohort of idiots that is decreasing in size.
Nick G.
To an extent, bigotry will always be a factor in politics. Simply, there will always be people unwilling to accept other groups of people. Helms epitomised this, and people with similar mindsets are still being elected to public office.
Steve
As long as this nation ignores the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and continues to deny same sex partners the same freedoms and equality taken for granted by everyone else there will always be the opportunity for someone like Jesse Helms to use hatred as a means to achieving power.
Ethan
Eventually people like Jesse Helm are going to die off and frankly I don't think the younger generations are that stupid.
John F. Reese, Sr. - Phoenix, AZ
The horrible "hate speech" of Jesse Helms and his ilk is being recognized for the diatribe that it is. Anyone wishing to foment negativity towards, not only the GLBT community, but also ANY "different" group of people, will find themselves an anachronism. Fortunately, most under 40 people have grown up with different sensibilities. Even for his era, Helms lost touch and was always looking back instead of forward to a new day. He, like Jerry Falwell and others, were just EVIL hate mongers. May he NOT rest in peace!!!
Jessica
Until that older generation dies off...our community will continue to be hated by those bigots. Unfortunately, that generation is full of crazy religious fundamentalists.
CC
Yes, bigotry isn't date stamped. With social backlash against being "PC" it would be easy for an Arlen Spector type politician to win a state or national ledgeslative seat in the South or Midwest.
Leo
Bigotry is there but more subtle these days. The REPUBLICIAN RIGHT-WING CHRISTIAN- FASCISTICS still use it to demonize in order to further their hateful agendas. As long as there are Right-Wing Christians, there will be hatred, racists, sexists, homophobia and bigotry.
Rick K
I sure hope it wouldn't, but I'm seeing lots of subtle racism in my own neighborhood these days. Not much against the gay & lesbian community, don't know that the bi & trans community has been put to the test. There is a big undercurrant of racism though, mostly involving local schools. So sad.
Barbara
Jesse Helms was forthright and violent. Racial and ethnic bigotry is much more subtle now.
Anonymous
I know it is sad to think so, but many people I know of are getting not less but more bigoted and secretly proud to be so strong in the face of opposition to it.
Rob Snowden
Unfortunately, although we like to think that in 2008 the US is a "more-enlightened and tolerant" nation, I believe the tactics of the GOP on behalf of candidate John McCain already are proving that discriminatory campaign ads and talking points utilizing bigotry are in full force and effect. How else do you explain the GOP's early claim that Barack Obama is raising the "race issue" AGAINST McCain? It's totally absurd how low the Republicans are willing to go in support of McCain's weak candidacy. Since they can't keep their candidate "on message", they'll use bigotry to smear Obama. Current polls indicate it's working!
Tom Kidd
They're doing it now.
Cynthia Goble
Helms was from a dying generation where bigotry and discrimination were ingrtained in the psyche. Americans are tired of this hateful divisiveness and the younger generations are much more embracing and supportive of equal rights for everyone.
Tom Brown
Homophobia will persist, but it will be a far more subtle brand of homophobia than was displayed by the likes of Jesse Helms or Anita Bryant. Even the most conservative Republicans are far less shrill when addressing gay issues than they would have been thirty years ago. Many of them, like Dick Cheney, are fully aware that some of the people nearest and dearest to them are gay.
Michael
There will still be homophobes spewing their venom but most politicians won't want to take a chance on alienating any of their constituants.
Anonymous
This country will only move forward when all of the old white boy network in the congress, senate etc are dead and gone. We need new blood. Our parents bigoted generation will never change. They are set in their ways.
Mark Gartner
Despite all of our gains, we must face the fact that there is still a large voting block that simply hates queers.
tom kuzma, Wyoming
Of course. If allowed, bigotry will always "work" to accomplish political goals (the study and practice of the use of power). In the book Daydream Believers, Fred Kaplan posits that the real world really did NOT change after 911; rather, the belief is only a US mythology promoted by those in the pursuit of power (and those who choose to Just Believe). So too, the promotion of the belief in the media/ public mythology that the US has become a stronger world "power" with the collapse of the USSR/ US Cold War supremacy. Many former allies of necessity, with the new-found peace, also found new independence from submission to the US.
Just Believe, and the Jesse's will take c/o USAll.
Or, as Prince George said to Bob Woodward (Plan of Attack, closing paragraphs, regarding how history will judge his war in Iraq): "History? Who CARES? By then, we'll ALL be dead!"
Or, as Diana West comments: terror is a tactic. War on Terror is as if Roosevelt in WWII had declared War on Blitzkrieg, or War on Sneak Attack.
Gordon
Bieing anti gay will continue in American politics because a lot of so called Christians hate anbody other than the few members of their own twisted sect or congregation.
Ron Grant
Hating others as Senator Helms did his entire life is deeply rooted in the Christian experience for so many Americans. Most people it seems must have some "thing" or even other people to hate so as to validate their own lives.
It has become the very center of the culture of religions for so many who hold to some tenets of belief and even those who don't.
May we learn to forgive ourselves and each other so as to stop the Hate that killed Matthew and Paul B of just a few years ago.
Jim C
There are still too many willfully ignorant people who refuse to get to know gay people for who we really are.
Kent P
I would like to say no, but while people (usually) will say "politically correct" things in public, that doesn't mean they won't still vote with their bigotry.

There are places in the country where people still agree with him.

Not really. Overtime, it has become less and less viable and I believe that it will continue in that direction...

Jesse Helm's style of politics plays on fear and ignorance in controlling people's vote. It uses hyperbole, Willie Horton style politics, to create a division, then exploits that division with a them versus us mentality, tossing in just enough religious truth/distortion to make people fear going against him.
This is still alive and well today. With the economy being the way it is; with the war in Iraq; with Iran, Syria, et cetera, people are afraid and angry and looking for someone to blame and Jesse Helms style politicians are serving up the GLBT community as the group to blame and hate.
Race will become the main target of hate and fear in the upcoming presidential election. Each side will claim the other side started it first but it will become a major issue. I've seen it rear its ugle head with comments that if Obama wins the white house will be full of Jessie Jacksons and Al Sharptoms and all other kinds of thugs.
Anonymous
As long as there are Republicans and right wing Christians, there will be the Jesse type hatred and bigotry.
don anderson
The US is amazingly racist, sexist & homophoebic. It is closet racism which will keep Obama out of the White House. So yes, J. Helms' spew of hatred would resonate almost as well now as before with the evil right-wing scum.
Anonymous
Sadly, yes, as long as there are bigots in the voting population of the US, Jesse Helm's style will work!

Yes. Jesse is dead but the Catholic Church and Republican Party, for two examples, will continue to demonize us in order to further their hateful agendas. Fortunately, it would seem that most Catholics are better than their church, and a few Republicans are better than their party.

Has anything really changed? Political Correctness is almost passe now. I think it's cool to be bad again. Just watch: the ugliness has just started against Obama--lots of thinly-veiled racism is on its way!

man was bad for the world. politics as usual, he kept the friends (other congressmen/senators) in order to foster a hate all his life. how sorry that a man can hate so much towards people. never mind color, he hated gays and lot of other people. too much hatred exists in our world. people are starving and dying each day and all this man had to do was be hateful. time to love one another. no more jesse helm's please.
Gerard
Helm has pasted the his torch of bigotry on to many individuals and organizations. We must always be on our guard for folks like him. He was just one of many that would take away all the right we have gained in a blink of an eye.
May God have mercy on his soul.

As long as there are people who will elect the likes of Jesse Helms, there will be his style of bigotry out there.
Dave O. from Colorado
Its still there but NO it will not work like it once did. We have evolved and are continuing to evolve. Hope-Fully all hate groups will find a end to their days. No matter what race or creed it comes from.
btw...bf wanted!!!
Roger Burr
NO, at least not in that form. Jesse Helms was openly racist; a posture which, today, would have him pilloried by every civil rights group in the country. However, there is still no shortage of bigots out there. The difference is, today, they are more subtle in their discrimination. No more rubber trunchons; today it is the brass knuckles hidden in the velvet glove. We still need to be VERY MUCH on our guard. We LGBT folks must continue to carry forward the fight for equal rights.
Anonymous
Yes, because there are so many others who believe as he did, that gays are Sodomites, blacks are the children of Cain, and women are below contempt. It's funny how the majority of the people who believe as he did live in the South!
Rick
Jesse Helms style of politics is slowly dying out because America, including the South, is moving towards a more progressive ideology.
Paul
It does in Florida, just look at the continual denial of glbt rights there.

Of coarse...religious fundamentalists, bigots, and haters still out number our community in the United States. I have hope for future generations!!

Unfortunately, todays Republican Party brand and the party platform is clearly anti-gay, and has been since as long as R Reagan. Unless the party of Lincoln overcomes it's old cash cows, we'll continue to see more of the same overt bigotry exposed, or as some would say," ...their staunch beliefs expressed".
Jen King
My former supervisor is a Fundamentalist(closeted nonetheless) who still feels that it's a choice, therefore she's "straight". She totally thinks that the likes of Helm's along with Haggerty and the rest are speaking the truth because it came directly from the Bible. Considering she's only mid-30's it scared the crap out of me. So yes, we still a generation coming up thinking this way.

I think the public has had more than enough of pontificating lying backroom -dealing right - wing extremism after 7 1/2 years of the worst presidency in history . As the LA Times did not post my commentary after Helms ' death I will repeat it here : Here's hoping that Helms ' demise was prolonged and agonizing , without benefit of analgesia .
Greg
It'll work to get politicians onto the public payroll. Whether they get to accomplish their goals is another issue. We had the separation of church & state when Helms was in office. Now we have "faith based": bigotry will get you tax dollars if you call it "religion."
Anonymous
Bigotry, like water, always seeks its level. As long as there is money to be made and power to be had by bolstering one group by subjugating another, others will rise to take Jesse's place. I'm glad he is dead but his brand of politics, unfortunately, did not die with him.
