The New York Drama Critics Circle has given its award for best Broadway play of the 2000-2001 season to Tom Stoppard’s The Invention of Love, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Invention of Love centers on the life of gay scholar and poet A.E. Housman. This is the fifth win for Stoppard, who also received the award for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1968), Travesties (1976), The Real Thing (1984), and Arcadia (1995). The award for best American play, given when a foreign playwright’s work wins best play (Stoppard is British), went to David Auburn’s Proof. The award for best musical went to The Producers. The awards will be presented May 22 in a ceremony at Manhattan’s Palm restaurant.
