The National Board of Review honored John Cameron Mitchell with Best Directorial Debut for his film Hedwig and the Angry Inch in their awards list, announced Wednesday. Other awards of GLBT interest include Naomi Watts as Female Breakthrough Performer for her passionate work in the lesbian-inclusive Mulholland Drive; Wit, based on the play by lesbian author Margaret Edson, as Best Film Made for Cable TV; and Special Mention for Excellence in Filmmaking nods for The Anniversary Party (codirected by pansexual actor Alan Cumming), The Deep End (codirected by out filmmaker Scott McGehee), Iris (a biopic about bisexual novelist Dame Iris Murdoch, starring Dame Judi Dench and Kate Winslet), L.I.E. (about two coming-of-age teens and their encounters with the neighborhood pedophile), and Piñero (starring Benjamin Bratt as bisexual poet-playwright Miguel Piñero).
