While director Stanley Kwan's latest film, Lan Yu, deals with a pair of taboo subjects in contemporary China--homosexuality and the 1989 crackdown on student protesters in Beijing--the story of a businessman's love affair with a student was showered with praise at the Golden Horse Awards, the Chinese-language "Oscars" presented Saturday in Taiwan. Lan Yu took home five awards, including Best Director, Best Actor (Liu Ye), Best Adapted Screenplay (Jimmy Ngai, from the online gay novel Beijing Story), Best Film Editing (William Chang), and the People's Choice Award. Strand Releasing will distribute Lan Yu in the United States in 2002.
