BBC News reports that Purple Radio, the United Kingdom's first digital radio station aimed at the GLBT community, was launched this week in London, with musician Boy George pressing the switch that began the station's first broadcast. Programming chief Peter Flynn says the station hopes to be an alternative to existing radio choices, adding, "It's the only station to broadcast live every night from a London dance floor." London mayor Ken Livingstone noted, "We need to have a range of broadcast outlets to ensure the capital's diversity is reflected. Lesbians and gay men are one of the many communities that make London such a wonderful place to live."
