The New York Post's Page Six reports that filmmaker Oliver Stone may abandon his proposed film biography of gay conqueror Alexander the Great because of a rival project from Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann. Luhrmann has a go-ahead from Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox as well as a commitment from Leonardo DiCaprio to star. Stone's financial backer, the German-owned Intermedia, ia still reeling from money lost on K-19: The Widowmaker and Windtalkers, not to mention the ever-rising budget on the upcoming Terminator III: Rise of the Machines. While an Intermedia spokeswoman says the company is still moving forward on the Alexander movie, one industry expert tells Page Six, "They might not want to take another gamble."
