Out British YouTube personality James Berry frankly addresses the ongoing phenomenon of biphobia and bi-erasure in his latest video, discussing misconceptions many in the gay and lesbian community have about bisexual people.
A gay man himself, Berry starts his discussion recounting his own experience dating a bisexual man. After the pair split up, Berry remembers telling someone that his ex was bisexual, only to be countered with "Well, bisexuals don’t exist."
This newest video comes right on the heels of another he made defending the trans community during the height of the debate over slurs that many perceive to be transphobic.
"If two people of the same sex are together, they’re automatically assumed to be gay," laments Berry in the video. "It’s like the whole thing with ‘gay marriage’. It’s same-sex marriage, I think you’ll find.”
"Bisexuals are shunned, not just outside of the LGBT community, but within it, also," Berry concludes. "And we have a responsibility to get rid of biphobia, and get rid of bi erasure amongst ourselves, and then also to encourage positivity surrounding people identifying as bisexual in the world at large."
