The liberal host of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher took to Twitter to respond to this week's Supreme Court hearings on the constitutionality of Proposition 8 and the so-called Defense of Marriage Act.
Responding to the debates in court over whether a couple's ability to procreate established that couple's legal right to marry, Maher had characteristically snarky, biting retorts.
"Listening to [the] Supremes on whether marriage is a magic word earned only [by] ejaculating in a vagina," tweeted Maher on Wednesday, when the Supreme Court was hearing U.S. v. Windsor, a challenge to Section 3 of DOMA, which prohibits the federal government from recognizing legally married same-sex couples.
Maher elaborated later Wednesday night, suggesting new distinctions within the "classic" institution of marriage.
