For an enlightening look at New York City politics, don't miss David Ilku dressed as alter-ego "Tina Turnstile" in a comedic takedown of Mayor Mike Bloomberg's unceasing commercialization.

The song is a satirical take on the Tina Turner hit, “We Don’t Need Another Hero.” It was originally penned to be performed on stage with Ilku's comedy Troupe UNITARD (a company he started with performers Mike Albo and Nora Burns). But the song is too big for one stage. Now, with partners Parker Posey and Jodi Lennon, Ilku brings it to the digital airwaves.

“I have lived in NYC since 1979 and there have been good changes and bad," Ilku said. "My main neighborhoods were Hell's Kitchen and the East Village.  Over the years there has been no community say over what is allowed to open in our neighborhoods, and the system is set up to 'what the market will bear' as far as how much rent commercial land lords can charge for rent to a tenant.  I watched very sweet and interesting shops have to close and pack up because of greedy landlords and the only thing that can afford these outrageous rents are corporations.  Our city is loosing so much of its flavor."

Ilku said Parker Posey saw him perform the Tina piece at a benefit for Bill Di Blasio for mayor and suggested they shoot it on Pride. "So we did it," he said, "with a little the extra help from dancers of the Upright Citizens Brigade.”

Performing for more than 20 years, Ilku has done it all — theater, film, club performances, you name it.  In the '90s, Ilku and his partner Clark Render made quite a splash with their insane duo, The Dueling Bankheads. (If you have not seen them in person, you needn’t worry. One of their performances was captured in the film Wigstock.) David was also seen in Off-Broadway hits such as Theater Couture’s E.S.P – Eyes of Supermodel Psychic, Doll and Carrie.  His singular brand of humor is at once identifiable as silly, zany, all bundled with a willingness to do anything for a laugh.

Ilku can also be seen on Here TV as a recurring character on the hit variety show She’s Living For This. Watch the Tina Turnstile video below:
