Being stuck in the backseat on a road trip wouldn't be so boring if RuPaul and John Waters were at the wheel. In the latest episode of the web series, RuPaul Drives, the drag superstar goes on a nine minute road trip with legendary fillmmaker to trade awesome nuggets of wisdom about being rejected and what it's like to be an outsider in society.
Waters just completed a book called Carsick, which documents his travels while hitchhiking from Baltimore to San Francisco in search of "perverts." Talking about this wild premise for a book is only the tip of the iceberg in this video.
Here are some of the highlights:
Waters on his core audience: "Minorities that don't even fit into their own minority. They can't even get along with their fellow lunatics. That's my core audience. People in prison with a sense of humor."
RuPaul on finding refuge in being "weird": "When you understand life's twisted hoax, you then go, 'Oh, okay. Now we can have some fun."
Waters on kids today: "I think they're having just as much fun being bad as I did. If you're a rebel today, you live with your parents, they haven't seen you in six months, and your shutting down the governments of different countries on your computer. That's how you'd rebel today. You'd be a hacker. I always say I want a hacker boyfriend" except they have bad posture."
Waters on being an outsider: "Everybody now wants to be an outsider. When we were young, nobody wanted to be. But now you and I should be insiders. That's more perverted. That's the ultimate revenge."
Waters on rejection: "A 'no' is free. Ask for what you want. if you get turned down, so what? It doesn't cost to ask for what you want."
