According to Nebraska AIDS Project statistics, the state's number of new HIV cases in 2002 was substantially lower than in 2001. Fifty new infections were reported last year, down from 87 cases reported in 2001. Reported AIDS cases declined as well, from 74 in 2001 to 72 in 2002. Nebraska's total AIDS-related deaths since the beginning of the epidemic stood at 656 as of July 2002. Death figures for the entire year were unavailable.
