The Charleston Area Medical Center Health Education and Research Institute has received a $460,000 federal grant to care for HIV patients in 16 southern West Virginia counties through March 2004. The grant, a renewal of a federal grant originally awarded in the fall of 2001, will support early intervention and primary care for HIV-positive patients and also be used to hire a part-time employee to assist with community outreach. The original federal grant of $690,000--the largest ever received by the institute--was the first federal Ryan White grant awarded in West Virginia.
