Police in San Francisco are investigating the beating of an Oakland woman outside a gay poetry event as a possible hate crime. Jack Broughton, 35, and Jean Earl, 32, began punching people while shouting antigay slurs just before midnight Thursday at StudioZ.tv, police officer Josh Kumli said. After getting kicked out of the club, the pair allegedly beat a 34-year-old Oakland woman outside, sending her to San Francisco General Hospital with minor injuries. Police found the pair a few minutes later taunting patrons at the Eagle Tavern, a gay bar about a block away from StudioZ.tv. Police said the suspects fought with them before being arrested on suspicion of assault, battery, and resisting arrest.
