Sheila Prue, a Democrat and longtime Brattleboro, Vt., police officer, was elected as Windham County sheriff on Tuesday, becoming the state's first female sheriff and the nation's second out lesbian sheriff. Prue defeated the incumbent, Republican Henry Farnum, who was appointed in February by Gov. Howard Dean.
"I feel wonderful," Prue said early Wednesday after all the results were in. "I just want to thank all the people of Windham County."
