School board members in Virginia's Fairfax County have decided that a book with a gay subplot can remain in elementary and middle school libraries. The board voted 7-1 Monday to keep Francesca Lia
Block's 1991 book, Witch Baby, arguing that banning the book because of its gay theme wasn't justified. Their decision upholds a recommendation by superintendent Daniel Domenech that the book carry a "Young Adult" sticker.

Reviews of Witch Baby describe the book as a fairy-tale novel set in Los Angeles about a purple-eyed girl who has questions about her sexual identity. Parents of four Fairfax County students had challenged the book, claiming its gay theme was inappropriate.
