Rush Limbaugh attacked Fox News host Shepard Smith on Thursday for declaring that President Obama was "now in the 21st century" after announcing his support for marriage equality.
Smith had played a clip of Obama's ABC interview and then said, “The president of the United States, now in the 21st century."
"Shep, where has the issue won?" Limbaugh shot back on his radio program. "Where has it emerged victorious, Shep, outside your house?"
The Daily Caller reports that Limbaugh went after Smith for later asking fellow Fox News anchor Bret Baier "if Republicans would go out on a limb and try to make this a campaign issue while sitting very firmly without much question on the wrong side of history on this?"
Limbaugh agreed with Baier that national polling that shows support for same-sex marriage is irrelevant.
"You want to look at the polls or do you want to look at the votes?" Limbaugh asked.
Then he pointed out that the president said the issue should still be left to the states to decide, and states have voted repeatedly in favor of constitutional bans. "Shep, did you even hear what he said? Nothing's changed. It's still up to the hicks and hayseeds in the states."
