New Zealand became the first nation in the Asia-Pacific region to legalize marriage for same-sex couples on April 17 after its Parliament voted 77 to 44 in favor of marriage equality.

However, what happened seconds after vote’s announcement was every bit as inspiring. The Guardian reports both onlookers in the public gallery as well as many lawmakers began singing the Maori love song ‘Pokarekare Ana’ in celebration of the historic moment.

New Zealand will join Canada, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, South Africa, Iceland, Argentina Sweden, Denmark and Portugal in recognizing same-sex marriage when the new legislation goes into effect in August.
