A lesbian couple who was granted the right to marry in Illinois through a court order tied the knot Wednesday, making Vernita Gray and Pat Ewert the first same-sex couple to do so in their state.

A federal judge in Chicago Monday ordered the Cook County clerk to immediately issue a marriage license to the couple. Gray was diagnosed with terminal cancer, because it is unlikely that she will live until the state's new marriage equality law’s effective date in June.

The couple was wed by Judge Patricia Logue, in an intimate ceremony with family and friends, the Windy City Times reports.
