The California Supreme Court will not revive Proposition 8 after the law's proponents attempted to halt weddings for gay and lesbian couples.

The court rejected a legal effort to stop same-sex couples' weddings in a closed session Wednesday. Prop. 8's supporters, the group behind ProtectMarriage, argued that only an appellate court should be able to overturn a statewide law, the Associated Press reports.

State courts did also declare the law unconstitutional, in addition to a federal court in San Francisco. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that ProtectMarriage did not have legal standing to appeal the decision in court.
