The Boston-based Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders is asking the Supreme Court to review a federal judge's ruling from last month that declared section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.
DOMA's section 3 prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in states and restricts federal benefits for such couples. GLAD wants the Supreme Court to validate last month's ruling from a federal judge in Connecticut that found section 3 unconstitutional — the suit was brought by six married couples and a widow who live throughout New England and are denied federal benefits. Members of Congress and the Justice Department previously asked the high court to review the ruling by a federal judge in Massachusetts who struck down section 3 in two separate lawsuits.
