Police detained several armed men who attacked LGBT activists taking part in an International Women’s Day rally in Moscow Saturday, website Queer Russia reports.

Roughly a dozen attackers threw eggs at the demonstrators and attempted to burn one of their placards. After police removed the assailants from the scene, it was discovered they were carrying knives, crowbars, and machetes, the site reports.

The LGBT contingent in the rally waved rainbow flags and carried placards denouncing sexism and homophobia. Police ordered the demonstrators to put away the rainbow flags but allowed them to display the signs. For several years, Moscow authorities have refused to allow pride celebrations or other LGBT-focused events to take place in the city, but the feminist rally had official permission.
