The Promise of Girl-on-Girl

The Promise of Girl-on-Girl

This just in: 90210 star Jessica Szohr will lock lips with real-life porn star Riley Steele in the new movie Piranha 3D. Just one more reason to run out and buy tickets opening night, right?

It's not the first time Hollywood has tried to sell a product with girl-on-girl action. TV, movies, music, you name it -- the hookups always seem to be directed at men, with the promise of a "lesbian subplot" courting curious gay viewers. Take a look back at some of the more obvious attempts at getting gay fans to tune in for a decidedly not gay event.

Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried: Jennifer's Body -- No sooner does Megan Fox suggest that she might be bisexual than she pairs up with Juno writer Diablo Cody for her latest film -- the story of a cheerleader (Fox) who specializes in offing her male classmates and, mid film, turns her attentions to seducing her best friend (Seyfried).

Denise Richards and Neve Campbell: Wild Things -- Scheming high-school temptress Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) seduces an unpopular student (Neve Campbell) in an attempt to cover up her web of lies. The two actresses go at it in a pool scene, which was promoted in trailers as one of the sexiest scenes ever filmed.

Selma Blair and Sarah Michelle Gellar: Cruel Intentions -- Worldly wise celebutante Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) sees the perfect opportunity to manipulate the new girl in school (Selma Blair) by teaching her how to swap spit in this MTV generation take on Dangerous Liaisons.

Madonna, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera: "Like a Virgin," MTV Video Music Awards -- It was the kiss seen round the world -- well, at least, one of them. Madonna and Britney Spears made a lot of noise with their onstage kiss while singing "Like a Virgin." Madonna's kiss with Christina seconds later ... not so much.

Katy Perry: "I Kissed a Girl" -- The mere suggestion that Christian singer turned racy pop star Katy Perry might kiss a girl in her first video got tongues wagging. But beyond the suggestive lyric, the video is all PG pillow fights and the seductive petting of a pussy.

Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson: MTV Movie Awards -- You have to give Sandra Bullock credit. If she really wanted the press to stop talking about her very public split from husband Jesse James, she found a way. The kiss wasn't so much played to arouse straight men as it was for comic relief, but don't think for a second it didn't get people talking.

Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston: Dirt -- Fans of Friends had been chomping at the bit for a mini reunion, and in truth, who wouldn't want to see Monica Geller and Rachel Green go at it? The end result, however, is little more than a peck between gal pals on Cox's short-lived, racy drama about an amoral tabloid editor.

T.A.T.U. -- Russian girl duo T.A.T.U. made a huge splash when their debut single, "All the Things She Said," was released in the United States. The song is about a girl who is afraid how society will react to her relationship with another girl, and bandmates Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova made out in the video, prompting the media to call them lesbians. Later, both girls said they weren't gay and had never pretended to be, but the song was viewed as a stunt, and their popularity stateside faded.

Hayden Panettiere and Madeline Zima: Heroes -- When cheerleader Claire Bennet heads off to college, she finds a new best friend -- roomie Gretchen (Madeline Zima). But Gretchen's feelings for Claire are stronger than friendship, and after a heated fight, she kisses her. Even though the show played up the "lesbian" story line for months, the rest of their relationship is really just hand-holding and late-night talks.

Jessica Szohr and Riley Steele: Piranha 3D -- Piranha 3D makes no bones about being a B-grade thriller, and 90210 star Jessica Szohr's purported Girls Gone Wild-style hookup with porn star Riley Steele seems to fit right in.
