The offscreen friction between Oscar-winning screen greats Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge, who referred to her costar as a "rotten egg lady," was so intense that it helped give their scenes a vivid lesbian subtext on-screen in Nicholas Ray's unforgettable 1954 western, an analogy for the McCarthy witchhunt of the 1950s. See it on the big screen in L.A. Wednesday as part of Outfest's Downtown 30 series.

Dustin Lance Black (pictured, above) makes his feature directing debut with this semiautobiographic, dreamlike, often very challenging comedy-drama about a teenage boy growing up in the South with an unhinged mother (a terrific Jennifer Connelly) who's having an affair with a Mormon sheriff (Ed Harris, pictured with Connelly below). Toby Jones makes a strong impression as a repressed gay man. Now playing in select theaters.
