Hs150814-1010. FILM: Golf Alpha Yankee
Golf Alpha Yankee is one of the first documentaries to shine a spotlight on the perils of being LGBT in Iran. Directed by Rick Flynn, the film focuses primarily on two young men who were arrested and tortured for being gay. Golf Alpha Yankee, which spells "gay" in military call letters, weaves interviews with the men, who are now refugees in Turkey awaiting asylum, with scripted reenactments of the horrors that befell them in the Middle Eastern nation, where those who dare to love someone of the same sex can still face the death penalty. Filmed over the course of two years, the project still needs to raise additional funds through its Kickstarter campaign, which ends this weekend. Contribute here, and watch the trailer below. -- Daniel Reynolds

Hs150814-099. ART: "Marsden Hartley: The German Paintings, 1913-1915"
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art hosts the first U.S. exhibition focused on gay American artist Hartley's time in Berlin, when he was inspired by the city's vibrant gay community and fell in love with a German military officer, Carl von Freyburg, who was killed early in World War I. Some of Hartley's images memorialize his lost love, while other works are more abstract. The show opened early this month and continues through November 30; there are docent-led tours Friday and Sunday afternoons. LACMA is also offering two related exhibitions: "Expressionism in Germany and France: From Van Gogh to Kandinsky," through September 14, and "Haunted Screens: German Cinema in the 1920s," opening September 21. Plan your visit at LACMA.org. -- Trudy Ring

Also, keep an eye out for the blink-and-you'll-miss-it alien same-sex smooch at the 3:25 mark. -- Jase Peeples

By encouraging people to stand up for who they are with her song "Brave" -- which she wrote after she was inspired by a close friend who was struggling with coming out of the closet -- and featuring a same-sex couple's engagement in her music video "I Choose You," Sara Bareilles has become an outstanding example of an LGBT ally. The U.S. leg of her current Little Black Dress tour has just wrapped, but fans Down Under and in Asia will soon be able to catch the talented singer onstage. She will arrive next month in Adelaide, Australia, for the first of her international tour dates, then make stops in New Zealand, Japan, and Singapore. Hs150814-033. WEB: Roomies
This new hilarious Web series Roomies is reminding us a little bit of Broad City: kinda gay, very wacky, and bringing you into a really twisted and intimate world. Stu (Edward Kiniry-Ostro) and Syd (Sal Neslusan) are a "we" who endure everything together: hallucinatory juice cleanses, PMS, and awkward third-wheel friends who need certain prescriptions filled. -- Michelle Garcia

Hs150814-022. MUSIC: I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss, Sinead O'Connor
The Irish chanteuse, who made as much of a name for herself in the '80s and '90s with her shaved head, combat boots, and rabble-rousing as she did with her soaring, haunting vocals, is out with the new single "Take Me to Church," and it's pure, powerful Sinead in a way that you'd expect her to musically evolve. It's on O'Connor's 10th studio album, I'm Not Bossy, I'm the Boss, which is available now. -- Tracy Gilchrist
