A living archive
As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Day 1967, gay patrons of the Black Cat Tavern in Los Angeles shared simple celebratory kisses, unaware that undercover officers were watching. Being queer was illegal in most states, and police routinely raided gay establishments. Once those patrons kissed, police moved in, arresting and beating customers and employees in a bar bust that changed history.
The events and protests that followed led to the formation of gay rights organizations and a newsletter called The Advocate, published by a group called P.R.I.D.E.: Personal Rights in Defense and Education. That newsletter grew into The Advocate magazine, which is now the oldest, largest, and leading publication and voice for the queer community.
The Advocate is the only surviving national print and digital magazine of its kind, founded before the 1969 Stonewall riots and protests in Manhattan against similar police brutality. The publication and its journalists have chronicled history-making moments and covered important issues like the AIDS crisis, crimes against the LGBTQ+ community, prime-time actors and sports stars coming out, the legalization of same-sex marriage, and transgender lawmakers elected to federal office.
The Advocate serves as a historic treasure trove of nearly 60 years of the queer community’s civil rights movement
