Trump

In his acceptance speech, the Republican nominee talks for over an hour and tosses a scrap to LGBTs.

True

Donald Trump officially became the GOP nominee during this week's Republican National Convention, crowning the entire event on Thursday night with a dark, bloviating acceptance speech that goes down as one of the longest in history.

Trump's speech ranged from several mentions of "law and order" to fear-mongering of immigrants and Muslims, to additional doom and gloom. At one point, he threw LGBT people a positive mention, although it was buried in more anti-Muslim sentiment.

"Only weeks ago, in Orlando, Florida, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist. This time, the terrorist targeted LGBTQ community. No good. And we're going to stop it. As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology.

Believe me. And I have to say as a Republican, it is so nice to hear you cheering for what I just said. Thank you."

Trump didn't mention the violence affecting LGBTs domestically nor did he speak of marriage equality (he's against it), transgender people using restrooms corresponding with their gender identity (his opinion on this changes day to day), nor protections against work and housing discrimination (it's so far from his radar as to be rendered invisible) or "conversion therapy," which his platform vaguely endorses.

Naturally, Twitter users weren't having any of it. Here is a sample of just some of the angry, incisive, and often hilarious tweets sent out during the speech:
