Clea DuVall Shares 1st Pics of Her Queer-Themed Film Happiest Season

Happiest Season

The director of the upcoming lesbian holiday rom-com that stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis offered a peek inside the movie.

The holidays can't come soon enough with Clea DuVall's queer-themed rom-com, slated to drop in theaters in November. While there were plenty of cast updates about Happiest Season, which stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate, Halt and Catch Fire) as a couple, there haven't been any pictures from the film until Wednesday, when the film's out director, DuVall, tweeted some stills that ran in People with a caption that gets to the heart of why queer visibility is so valuable.

The film from TriStar Pictures tells the story of Stewart's character, who plans a surprise marriage proposal to her girlfriend (Davis) while they're home for the holidays, only to discover that her girlfriend is not out to her conservative family.

DuVall, a favorite since she starred as a baby lesbian in 1999's conversion therapy satire But I'm a Cheerleader, directs the film from a script she penned with her writing partner Holland. Happiest Season marks DuVall's second foray into directing a comedy feature, the first being 2016's The Intervention, a modern take on The Big Chill that starred DuVall, Melanie Lynskey, Natasha Lyonne, Cobie Smulders, Alia Shawkat, and Jason Ritter.

Happiest Season costars Dan Levy, Victor Garber, Mary Steenburgen, Aubrey Plaza, and Alison Brie.

For Pride, the Happiest Season account shared a picture of DuVall with Holland and several of the cast members.
