L.I.E. and The Deep End among Boston critics' favorites
The Boston Society of Film Critics voted Sunday for their favorites of 2001, and named David Lynch's lesbian-inclusive thriller Mulholland Drive as Best Picture. Brian Cox's layered portrayal of a pederast in L.I.E. won him Best Actor accolades, in a tie with Denzel Washington for Training Day. L.I.E. director Michael Cuesta won the new filmmaker prize. Tilda Swinton was named Best Actress for her portrayal of a mother going to great lengths to protect her gay son in The Deep End.
The Boston Society of Film Critics awards, in their entirety:
Best Picture: Mulholland Drive (runner-up: Apocalypse Now Redux)
Best Actor (tie): Brian Cox, L.I.E.; Denzel Washington, Training Day
Best Actress: Tilda Swinton, The Deep End (runner-up: Naomi Watts, Mulholland Drive)
Best Supporting Actor: Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast (runner-up: Steve Buscemi, Ghost World)
Best Supporting Actress: Cameron Diaz, Vanilla Sky (runner-up: Scarlet Johansson, Ghost World)
Best Screenplay: Christopher Nolan, Memento
Best Cinematography: Roger Deakins, The Man Who Wasn't There
Best Foreign Film: Amores Perros
Best Documentary: The Gleaners and I
Best New Filmmaker: Michael Cuesta, L.I.E.
Special Citation: Clinton McClung, for eclectic and adventurous programming of the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Mass.
