Following the New York state senate's rejection of a marriage equality bill by a decisive 38-24 margin on Wednesday, the attention of advocates and opponents turns to New Jersey, where prospects for a vote and its outcome remain anything but certain.

"Now that the question in New York has been decided for the near term, adversaries in the gay marriage debate are turning attentions to New Jersey, another state where the legislature is expected to vote on gay marriage in the coming weeks," reports The Christian Science Monitor.

In the Garden State, where civil unions for same-sex couples are legal and the antigay National Organization for Marriage makes its headquarters, recent polls show that voters are split on the marriage equality bill.

Democratic legislative leaders, who have indicated they will only bring the bill to a vote if they are certain it will pass, would need to act before January 19, when governor-elect Chris Christie, a Republican who has vowed to veto the marriage equality bill, takes office.
