Lawmakers in the New Jersey senate judiciary committee will vote on the marriage equality bill on Monday, likely sending the bill to a vote by the full senate on Thursday.
State senator Ray Lesniak announced the voting time frame to some 650 marriage equality advocates who attended a rally in Trenton on Thursday afternoon, according to The Star-Ledger.
"On Monday in the judiciary committee, we're going to vote on marriage equality," said Lesniak, a Democrat. "On Thursday the full senate is going to vote on marriage equality. And God be willing, we'll have 21 votes."
The scheduling of a vote in the judiciary committee is regarded as a highly positive sign for the bill, as leaders previously said they would not bring the legislation to a vote in the 40-member senate unless it had the votes needed to pass.
Senate president Richard Codey confirmed that the full senate will vote on the measure on Thursday, according to The Star-Ledger.
Should the bill pass, it would head to the assembly, where Democrats hold a 50-30 majority. Gov. Jon Corzine, who leaves office in January, has promised to sign the bill.
