With its third season underway, The Good Fight, a CBS All Access Original Series, is poised to take on the myriad of current affairs that we have seen in recent news cycles. With several incredibly strong women leading the groundbreaking series, The Good Fight is arguably the most feminist show right now dealing with timely social issues, including racism, sexism, gun control, privacy invasion, and the #MeToo movement. Here are just a few reasons why we are obsessed with these powerful women.
Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) has proven herself indestructible again and again on The Good Fight. A consummate lawyer who is ousted from her own firm following a scandal in Season 1, Diane gets back on her feet and joins an African-American firm. Diane is extremely strong-willed (she is a long-time Democrat and always claps back at a Republican when needed) and knows to throw subtle shade when necessary (she rolls her eyes constantly when dealing with her male counterparts). Trump’s presidency, however, has been testing Diane’s strength. The absurdity provoked by the Trump administration paralyzes Diane for a while and apathetically, she begins micro-dosing on psilocybin mushrooms as an escape. Ultimately fed up, Diane starts a revolution with an effort to impeach Trump. In Season 3, Diane will continue her fight against the administration. And let’s be real -- who doesn’t want to see Christine Baranski in high-fashion couture leading the resistance?
Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) quickly wins fans over on The Good Fight by spilling truths with unminced words, inspiring her coworkers through uplifting speeches, and celebrates success with complete sincerity (plus the occasional drunk dance). Joining a new firm, Lucca works her way up, which is not an easy feat for a woman in a predominantly male environment -- not to mention the criticism she faces from her colleagues after her unexpected pregnancy. When it comes to motherhood, Lucca does not follow the conventional path: She gets pregnant after a one-night stand with her Congressional-running ex-boyfriend and later decides to have the baby on her own. Even when pregnant, Lucca refuses to work any less. In fact, she works until the very last minute when she must go into labor. In the new season, Lucca will attempt to balance her life as a full-time lawyer and new single mother.
Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie) brings major LGBTQ+ representation to The Good Fight. As the only lesbian character among the leading cast, Maia represents a more sensitive and vulnerable side of life in law and politics. Maia works extremely hard so that people will forget about her scandalous family background. After being unfairly implicated in her dad’s Ponzi scheme, Maia must prove her worth by working harder and with more passion than any of her peers. The show explores Maia’s journey as she stands up to fight for minorities’ rights without fear of the obstacles in her path.
