...St. Mungo's Homeless Charity
Although I have no personal experience of homelessness, I've always found it easy to imagine the way in which life might unravel through ill fortune or dire circumstances, leading to an existence on the street. After deciding that 10% of the royalties from my novels should go to charity, I discovered St. Mungo's. Based in London, it runs hostels and provides a range of services, including a creative writing group I attended, intended to help people get back on their feet. I feel very privileged to be in a position to help support this precious provision of a second chance. Mungos.org ...Forbidden Colors
It would be amiss of me, as a novelist, not to select a book. I've just come back from a reading tour in Japan and read this brilliant novel by Yukio Mishima, which scandalized Japan when it was published in 1953 with its bold look at sexuality. It was years ahead of its time. Powells.com ...Kilsgaard
Having throughout my life worn glasses that I've never loved or looked good in, I've finally found a Danish designer I love. For the first time in many years I'm actually wearing glasses outside of the house. Kilsgaard-Eyewear.com ...The Tree of Life
One movie really stood out this year. Directed by Terrence Malick and starring Brad Pitt, it was bizarre and beautiful and unlike anything I've ever seen in the cinema. It's now on DVD. FoxSearchlight.com/TheTreeOfLife ...MoMA gift shop
I have a selection of odd desk objects that I play with when I'm writing, and most of them are from New York's Museum of Modern Art. They're items to toy with when you're trying to crack a particular
