San Francisco Just Swore in First LGBTQ Fire Chief

San Francisco's first LGBTQ fire chief, Jeanine Nicholson, was just sworn in to office.

Despite San Francisco's long history of a gay haven, no out firefighter ever rose to the top post in the department, according to the SF Gate.

"I am honored and humbled to have been chosen by Mayor Breed for this role and I am excited to serve the city in this new capacity," said Nicholson in a statement released Monday. "I look forward to ensuring that our department remains prepared to respond to any emergencies facing the city, and to working proactively with other city departments help our homeless population get the care they need."

Nicholson has worked for the department for 25 years, and she follows Joanne Hayes-White, San Francisco's first female fire chief, to the post.

Mayor London Breed said it was important to mark the milestone appointment.

"Yes, she has made history, and will continue to be a role model for so many women, for so many brothers and sisters in our LGBT community," she told the website.

Nicholson told the San Francisco Chronicle that she takes the moment seriously as well.

"Because of my position and job in general, I have been a role model for many LGBTQ youth, and I will continue that," she said. "I know I keep saying everything is an honor, but it is."

"And I don't take that lightly," she continued.
