7 Ways to Resist This Week

Here are this week's recommendations to support LGBT and other activist causes.

01-prisonbreakPrison Break: Sequel

After seven years of hard time, Fox's Prison Break has returned for a special event season. The sequel is particularly eventful, because its star, Wentworth Miller, is now an out gay man leading a drama on network television. In this season, Miller, who portrays Michael, is being held prisoner in Yemen. And one of the series primary villains, Cyclops, is also played by an out actor, Amin El Gamal. Check out this victory in representation in the captivating season premiere Tuesday on Fox, and watch the trailer below.

1984 and The Handmaid's Tale

One aspect of a Trump presidency that could not have been predicted was that readers would turn to dystopian novels about Authoritarian governments for escape. Whether readers are using George Orwell's 1984 or Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale as guides to living under the Trump regime or if they're somehow finding escapism and solace in those frighteningly accurate novels is anyone's guess (although it's likely a little of both), but there's such a demand for both classics that Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will reissue them in hardcover.

Orwell's landmark 1944 novel imagined a world in which the main character works for the Ministry or Truth, a government agency that specializes in propaganda and revisionist history under the ever-watchful, inescapable eye of Big Brother, while Atwood's 1985 feminist classic imagines a white patriarchal government under which women are valued merely as vessels in terms of the viability of their reproductive organs.

The hardcover reissue of 1984 drops April 4, while The Handmaid's Tale will be available in hardcover as of April 25.

06-ppPlanned Parenthood

This lifesaving organization needs your help. Mike Pence, our anti-woman, homophobic vice president, cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate this week to advance legislation allowing states to deny Planned Parenthood federal family planning funds. The organization has long been targeted by Republicans, even though it provides crucial services like cancer screenings, STD testings, and help for expectant mothers. Federal money under Title IX already goes to those aforementioned services and cannot be used for abortions; the Senate is now making it possible to starve Planned Parenthood simply over ideology. Help Planned Parenthood pick up the slack by donating to the group today, and read here about how LGBT people benefit from this nonprofit.
