7 Ways to Resist This Week

There is a spate of female-led films slated for 2018 and the first big one of the year is the sci-fi/horror mash-up Annihilation from Ex Machina director Alex Garland. Natalie Portman stars as Lena, a biologist who leads a team of women played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriquez, and Tuva Novotny into the "shimmer," an area of marshland in Florida brought to or created by an alien life form whose intention is not clear. The women descend into the shimmer to encounter what appears to be breathtaking, benevolent natural life. Or is it? Oscar Issac costars.
