Darren Star--the openly gay creator of Sex and the City, Melrose Place , and Kitchen Confidential--will create and executive-produce a new soap opera for the BBC. Variety reports that Star is close to signing a deal with the network in which he would mastermind a new drama set in the world of Formula One auto racing. Star would retain the rights to create different versions of the show in different international markets. He told Variety that the Formula One idea "felt very specific for the European market. It's an enormous sport overseas that barely exists here. It's a dazzling world and fun world to explore, and I usually take my cues for shows [by imagining] worlds I'd like to spend time in myself."
