The Broadway revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, John Cameron Mitchell's hilarious and heartbreaking tale of a gender-fluid German rock "star," is ending its run on September 13, The New York Times reports.

The musical played over 500 performances since coming to the Belasco Theatre last year; it won Tonys for Best Revival and Best Actor for star Neil Patrick Harris. After Harris departed the show, out actor Andrew Rannells donned the famous Farrah wig, as well as Glee actor Darren Criss, Dexter star Michael C. Hall, and John Cameron Mitchell, who originated the role off-Broadway in the '90s. The most recent "Hedwig" was played by movie star Taye Diggs, though his performance wasn't received as enthusiastically as his predecessors -- ticket sales began slumping, leading to the decision to end the show.

Mitchell's creation not only inspired the Broadway production, but a much-loved 2001 film that brought the offbeat tale to even more audiences.
