More than 20
University of Connecticut students will stage a visual
protest to illustrate violent intolerance for racial,
sexual, and gender minorities. The group, Queers
United Against Discrimination, are planning to stand
in the middle of campus dressed as bloodied victims on the
Day of Silence, scheduled for Wednesday, April 18.
"The
demonstration is a living memorial to honor hate-crime
victims and bring attention to their
injustice," junior Crystal Pretzman, a student
activist, said in a statement. "We realize the
privilege in being able to take off the makeup at the
end of the day. Real victims can't."
Part of the
visual protest includes securing mock tombstones with slurs
written on them.
Other
participants will hand out information on hate crimes and
tags with names of hate-crime victims to wear for the
day. (The Advocate)
