It's not exactly light reading, but it's largely in lay terms and deals with an important subject: A variety of opinions on marriage equality and how the U.S. Supreme Court would rule on it should a case arrive there are available at an online symposium on SCOTUS Blog, an independent site dealing with Supreme Court-related issues.

The symposium has a week's worth of posts, ranging from law school dean Erwin Chemerinsky saying the time for marriage equality has come to conservative lawyer Brian Raum saying only heterosexual marriage promotes the public good. Also featured are more legal heavy hitters such as Laurence Tribe, Ruthann Robson, and former congressman Bob Barr, who has gone from sponsoring the antigay Defense of Marriage Act to supporting the right of gay couples to marry.

The symposium will continue with more posts this week, with contributors scheduled to include gay scholar Kenji Yoshino and anti-marriage equality leader Maggie Gallagher, chair of the National Organization for Marriage.

Trudy Ring

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
