The deaths of Tyianna “Davarea” Alexander and Samuel Edmund Damián Valentín come after a year that saw record fatal violence against trans Americans.
Her death in Puerto Rico is the sixth known homicide of a trans person in the territory and the 30th in the U.S. this year.
The suspects are charged with murdering Serena Angelique Velázquez and Layla Pelaez after discovering the women were trans.
The men have been detained in connection with the deaths of Serena Angelique Velázquez and Layla Pelaez but have not been charged.
Penélope Díaz Ramírez, killed at the Bayamon correctional complex, was also the fifth trans person murdered in the U.S. territory this year.
Serena Angelique Velázquez and Layla Pelaez are the third and fourth trans people killed in the territory this year, and the eighth and ninth in the U.S. as a whole.
Yampi Méndez Arocho, shot to death last week, is the second trans person murdered in the territory this year.
