The Tony-winning Hairspray composer will entertain with the help of his famous friends.

Live from New York, it's Friday nights with composer Marc Shaiman!

Subterranean performance venue 54 Below will kick off The 54 Below Show October 17 with inaugural host Shaiman, a Tony Award and Grammy Award winner for his work on the musical Hairspray.

"Before The Tonight Show, before Saturday Night Live, before Your Show of Shows and The Ed Sullivan Show, variety shows played live in venues across America," according to press notes about the late-night event. "Matching the humor, quick pace, and familiar faces of a televised variety show with the intimate, underground feel of a supper club, The 54 Below Show brings the live variety show back to its roots with an only-in-New York experience not to be missed."

While manning the piano, Shaiman will introduce special guests and surprise visitors. "I've gone through my phone book -- from legendary performers to my mother -- and who knows who will show up, but I assure you it will be entertaining," says the five-time Oscar nominee in a statement.

Shaiman and Scott Wittman, his partner in work and life, have been celebrated in recent years for their contributions to the Academy Awards telecast, the Tony Awards telecast, and NBC's Smash. They also cowrote Bridget Everett's Rock Bottom, which is currently playing at Joe's Pub off-Broadway.

After he made headlines for criticizing a theater director who supported California's Proposition 8, Shaiman spoke to The Advocate in 2008 about creating the viral sensation Prop. 8 -- The Musical.
