Emmy Award nominee T.R. Knight returns to the New York stage in Pocatello,a new work by out playwright Samuel D. Hunter.

The world premiere, which began performances November 21, will officially open December 15 and run through January 4 at off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons.

Knight's character, Eddie, "manages an Italian chain restaurant in Pocatello -- a small, unexceptional American city that is slowly being paved over with strip malls and franchises," according to press notes about the production. "But he can't serve enough Soup, Salad, and Breadstick Specials to make his hometown feel like home. Against the harsh backdrop of Samuel D. Hunter's Idaho, this heartbreaking comedy is a cry for connection in an increasingly lonely American landscape."

A representative for the show tells The Advocate that Eddie is gay, which contributes to his feelings of isolation in suburban Idaho.

The Pocatello cast also includes Jessica Dickey, Jonathan Hogan, Brian Hutchison, Leah Karpel, Cameron Scoggins, Brenda Wehle, Danny Wolohan, and Elvy Yost.

Hunter is a recent recipient of a highly coveted MacArthur "Genius Grant." His previous work includes LGBT-inclusive plays The Whale and The Few.

Knight's theater credits include Broadway revivals of Noises Off, Tartuffe, and A Life in the Theatre, but the actor is best known for his role on Grey's Anatomy,a show he left amid controversy in 2009. The actor publicly came out as gay in 2006 after it surfaced that costar Isaiah Washington had called him an antigay slur during an on-set argument with Patrick Dempsey.

Last year, while appearing off-Broadway in Romeo & Juliet at Classic Stage Company, Knight quietly married his boyfriend of three years, Patrick Leahy, in an upstate New York ceremony.
