When antigay Rowan County, Ky., clerk Kim Davis was taken into federal custody for contempt of court this morning, Twitter erupted.

Predictably, the response was divided between bemusement and brimstone, with many tweets painting Davis as a martyr for "religious freedom" in America. Here's some of the best -- and worst -- that Twitter had to offer:




Meanwhile, Davis's legal counsel, the certified anti-LGBT hate group Liberty Counsel, didn't hold its tongue:



And perhaps the most extreme response was not a tweet at all, but rather a Facebook rant from a former pastor who recently encouraged followers to fight the so-called gay agenda with semi-automatic rifles:
