When antigay Rowan County, Ky., clerk Kim Davis was taken into federal custody for contempt of court this morning, Twitter erupted.
Predictably, the response was divided between bemusement and brimstone, with many tweets painting Davis as a martyr for "religious freedom" in America. Here's some of the best — and worst — that Twitter had to offer:
Kim Davis in federal custody removes all doubts about the criminalization of Christianity in this country. We must defend #ReligiousLiberty!

BREAKING: JUDGE ORDERS CHRISTIAN CLERK JAILED FOR FOLLOWING HER RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. http://t.co/VcfBc4vfop

Sorry, folks - I've got an infestation of anti-Christian vermin on my twitter feed right now. We're working on the issue.

If you try to use religion as your excuse not to follow the law, you're gonna go to jail. #KimDavis #SMITE

Meanwhile, Davis's legal counsel, the certified anti-LGBT hate group Liberty Counsel, didn't hold its tongue:
#KimDavis jailed for the crime of #BeingChristian #persecution in #America #Jesus

#LGBT formula: 1) Force affirmation of homosexual sin, 2) Christian refuses to disobey God, 3) Christian jailed for "contempt of court"

The criminalization of Christianity is at hand. Bow a knee before "LGBT" gods or face the fiery furnace http://t.co/V15Ia9UyL9 #homofascism

#KimDavis remember: Republican candidate Ben Carson said that going to jail makes people gay. So Jesus may have the last laugh after all.

We've reached a point where you can ignore laws if you're on the left's team and go to jail on the right. What day does the Civil War start?

And perhaps the most extreme response was not a tweet at all, but rather a Facebook rant from a former pastor who recently encouraged followers to fight the so-called gay agenda with semi-automatic rifles:
CHRISTIAN HOLOCAUST HAS BEGUN!!! I'm calling for Americans to INVADE ROWAN COUNTY and PROTEST!!! Christian lady ARRESTED for not endorsing GAY MARRIAGE!
