Though
politicians and media outlets have called on gay Portland
mayor Sam Adams to resign on the heels of his
announcement that he'd had an affair with an
18-year-old former intern, one Portland based group is
planning to rally in support of Adams.
A Facebook group with 2,000-plus
members has organized a Friday night rally in
support of Adams. The group is made up of "Sam Adams
supporters who feel that his two decades of committed
service to the city of Portland by far outweigh his
honesty about the details of his (legal and consensual)
sex life. Our trust is not broken because he made a mistake
when cornered with an inappropriate question."
The city is
divided on whether Adams should resign. Four major
newspapers have called for Adams to step down.
Willamette Week, the alternative
publication that first reported Adams's admission
he'd lied about his relationship with now-21-year-old
Beau Breedlove, has refused to take a stand either
way.
"It's
unfortunate that gays, women, and African Americans have to
be held to a different standard than straight, white
middle class males," Byron Beack, a writer for
Willamette Week and a friend of Adams's,
wrote on his blog.
Adams has said he
will decide next week whether or not he'll resign.
