Several videos depicting high school students in Florida yelling anti-LGBTQ+ speech at fellow students have been making the rounds on social media.
The students at Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County are heard yelling, "Two genders, faggot! There are two genders, faggot!"
A group of boys at the school had gathered to protest against the Gay-Straight Alliance Club, according to local station WJXT. One parent told the TV station that it was chilling to see the videos. The parent also said she saw students stepping on a Pride flag.
"It was shocking. It was scary," the parent said. "It made me wonder what could possibly happen at this school to put students in danger, and it was kind of akin to videos you would see in the early 1960s during the civil rights movement."
Another parent, Nancy Tray, also spoke out against the videos.
"It was shocking and horrifying," Tray said. "And I just, it was very emotional. It made me extremely sad. It makes you question as a parent your life choices if this is the right school for your kid."
"I was very scared to see that kind of hate," a parent told WJXT. "To me, that's only how this could be described, as a hate crime happening on the campus where my child is at school."
Parents have turned the videos over to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office. Authorities told parents that the videos were going to be referred to the office's youth resources division.
A school district spokesperson also said they were looking into what happened, the outlet reports.
"I think it's impossible to learn in an environment where, at a very minimum, you don't feel safe. Our students need to feel safe in order to get the education that they need," Tray said. "I think that we need to have no tolerance for this sort of behavior."
