The Maine Sunday Telegram -- a publication of the Portland Press Herald -- endorsed marriage equality in an editorial that urged voters to mark no on Question 1 come November.
"Maine voters should recognize that even if their personal beliefs about marriage haven't changed, reality has," stated the editorial. "They should accept reality and vote 'no' on Question 1."
If passed, Question 1 would overturn "An Act to Promote Marriage Equality and Affirm Religious Freedom." The bill, signed into law in May, authorizes same-sex couples to marry.
"Limiting marriage to a man and a woman would not make families led by same-sex couples go away," added the paper. "It would just keep them in a legally inferior position that is inconsistent with Maine's tradition of equal protection under the law."
Mainers will vote on Question 1 on November 3.
