Donal Og Cusack, a star of the ancient Gaelic sport of hurling, broke a national barrier with his recent revelation that he is gay.

Donal Og, as he is known throughout Ireleand, revealed his sexual orientation in his autobiography, Come What May. He is believed to be Europe's first openly gay elite sportsman, according to The Times of London.

While the reaction of the conservative Gaelic Athletics Association generally has been positive, he reports some bumps along the road, according to The Times.

"He also tells of how, during a championship away match against rivals Tipperary a spectator used a megaphone to lead an abusive chant," the paper reports. "His mother no longer attends matches as a result."

Excerpts from Donal Og's autobiography are being serialized in the Irish Daily Mail.
